Jooks Bicycle Studio

Jooks Bicycle Studio was a bicycle retail and community space in Tallinn, designed by Tõnis Savi and Ester Kannelmäe with the Jooks team between 2014 and 2025. It was a meeting point for urban cycling culture, combining retail, community and everyday social life within a renovated industrial space.

The project began with very little: a concrete floor, white walls and an existing shell. From there, however, it never really reached a fixed point of completion. Over almost ten years, roughly the entire life of the shop, the interior continued to evolve through use, testing and adjustment. In that sense, Jooks was less a finished interior than an ongoing spatial experiment in how to run a place that was deliberately more than a conventional shop.

The architecture followed the same logic. The interventions were inexpensive, simple and easy to alter. Found objects and reused elements sat alongside purpose-made pieces, allowing the space to change without losing its identity. Much of that identity developed collectively, through continuous collaboration with the changing Jooks team and the practical needs that emerged over time.

This openness to change became one of the project's defining qualities. The space could absorb new functions, new people and different forms of cycling culture without requiring a complete redesign each time.

The result was a place that felt crisp and direct, but never clinical. Its industrial character remained visible, softened by use, accumulation and the traces of the people who occupied it. More than anything, Jooks was intended to feel open: a place where anyone connected to cycling culture could arrive and feel that they belonged.
